* 3 more announcements to go until I bid
adieu. And I'm all choked up... !
1. It's been a bestseller for as long as I can remember.
Totaling 24 books, it's quite a corpus. And if you finished it, you'd
celebrate too. Come celebrate with Yael Landman
as she finishes Tanach (the entire Bible... 24
books, possibly without any pictures!) this Friday night, 10pm in the 2nd Floor
lounge of HRN. There will be desserts. Possibly
something else as well. Come to find out!
2. Rosh Chodesh
Kislev is this Sunday, November 11! Break out the party & dancin' shoes...
a. And if you're a woman... then come out and celebrate the
new month at the PREMIER event of the Women's Rosh Chodesh
group! Get your game on to sanctify the new moon, sip some tea, munch
some homemade goodies, and shmooze
something fierce with some fabulous Penn women. The group will also be
making gorgeous Chanukah decorations that will be sure to enhance the
ambiance of your room ... and your month!
Sunday, 10:30am - 12pm. 503,
HRN.
3. It's hard
for me to believe, but my time whiling away the hours at the keyboard sending
these emails is coming to a close. But that means that we're looking for
a few good men and/or women to be co-chair! Are you interested?
Sound like it could be fun? (hint: it is!) Are
you considering it at all? Come speak to either me (teitcher@sas.upenn.edu)
or Yoni (yolevins@sas.upenn.edu)
- we'd love to talk to you about it! Elections will be sometime in the
beginning of December, and all candidates will need to submit a Candidate's
Statement before the election (actual dates TBA). But if you're
interested... let us know!
4. Professor Marc Shapiro will be
spending Shabbat with us next Shabbat, Nov. 16-17. He will be speaking on
the following topics:
i)
Sense & Censorship: Is Historical Truth a Jewish Value? Friday
night, 8pm in the 2nd Floor Auditorium of Hillel
ii) Judaism and
Islam: Historical and Halachik Perspectives Shabbat morning following services, ~10:45
am, 2nd floor auditorium, Hillel
iii) The
Limits of Orthodox Theology: Maimonides' Thirteen Principles Reappraised
Shabbat Afternoon, 3pm, 2nd floor Library of Hillel
This promises to be an interesting weekend and will provide a forum to discuss
some rather controversial topics. See you there!

5. Shani
Taragin (yes, that's right - the Shani Taragin) will be coming to
speak at Penn this coming Wednesday, November 14th, 6:30pm. Keep your
eyes and ears posted for more details!
6. Panini Bar will be open
this weekend! And there's exciting news, too!
Hours of operation will be the usual 8pm -12am. But
thanks to a brand-spankin' new deep fryer, fries are
delivered to not once, not twice, but thrice as fast! That's 3
times faster than before!
Also, this week's mozzarella cheese is brought to you by the good folks at
Shalom Pizza.
7. Hillel Freshmen Retreat
Attention: Class of 2011
Get ready for this year's annual Hillel Freshmen Retreat
Where: JCC Camp Medford (about a 40 minute drive from campus)
When: November 16-17th
Why: Because you want to meet an amazing new and different group of Jewish
freshmen in a relaxed atmosphere. We'll provide the food, try our hardest to
snag some Hillel cookies, and get you back to Penn early Saturday night.
How: Email Emily Belfer (belferea@sas.upenn.edu)
to sign up or with any questions you may have.
8. Please return all books to the Beit Midrash! We love for
you to use them, but it makes it kind of difficult to other people to use them
if there are no more books for people to use! Please remember that no
books are allowed to be taken out of the Beit Midrash, and... return
any books that you might have! Thanks for you cooperation.
This has been a public service announcement from the Beit Midrash committee.
They want the books back.
