J-BaGeL GREEN Potluck Shabbat Dinner (this Friday!) Cooking Class- 3:00pm @ TBD Potluck Shabbat Dinner- 7:00pm @ the LGBT Center (3907 Spruce Street) Have you ever wondered if a "green" Shabbat dinner is possible? We have the solution! Join J-Bagel and the Penn Vegetarian Society for a cooking class and vegan Shabbat dinner this Friday, November 8th at 7:00pm. The Cooking Class will take place at 3:00pm at a kitchen TBD on campus. The list for the class includes vegan-kosher Matzo Ball Soup, Mun Cookies, and Kugel. After the class, we will break and reconvene for our regular potluck Shabbat dinner in the LGBT Center. It will be vegetarian this week (so no meat.) The point of this dinner is not to influence veganism or a carnivore diet, but to have a fun time cooking Jewish foods in an earth friendly way. RSVP is required for the cooking class, and usual for the dinner. Please do so as soon as possible to Jason Goodman at gja@sas.upenn.edu. We hope to have you with us for a great green queer shabbatfest! Bnei Akiva Habitat for Humanities trip! Submitted by: Daniel Bendavid on November 13, 2009

Apply (now!) to Alliance and Understanding: Explore the partnership between Jews and Blacks during the Civil Rights Era while making amazing friendships! Spend your Spring Break in the South with your new friends, walking where history happened! As an Alliance and Understanding (AU) participant, you will become part of a small, diverse, and interesting group of roughly 30 people. Together, you will hear amazing speakers and participate in interesting discussions, culminating in a spring break trip to the South (Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; Selma, AL; Montgomery, AL). The goal of the program is to foster understanding between the two communities on campus and to educate the larger campus on Black and Jewish issues and on this important partnership in American history. All we ask is a genuine interest in the topic, a willingness to learn and a desire to meet and build new and unique relationships. In addition, you must be available to attend a short afternoon retreat in November, four to six lectures/discussions between November and March (less than 2 hours each), and the Spring Break trip from March 7-12, 2010!!! This program is open to ALL interested Penn students, and has had participants from a diverse array of cultural backgrounds.
Alliance and Understanding is a moving, fun, and fascinating program where you get to develop friendships with new people. There are many ways that U.S. history could have unfolded from the 1950's and we explore some of the things (from boycotts and marches, to religion, to key figures like MLK jr.) that allowed history to develop to where it is today.
There is a short online application (more information is also available on the website): http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/gic/auapp.php
