About the 4105 Community

We are casually known as the "4105 Jewish community" after the apartment building at 4105 Spruce St., the historical center of our community in University City. In the past few years, we have seen extensive growth in the diversity and vibrance of our community. Today, we boast a membership of over 100 (mostly) 20-somethings. While the community is mostly made up of "singles," about 30% of our membership are married couples, including several with young children.

The "University" in University City includes several institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University (main campus), the University of the Sciences at Philadelphia.  All are within walking distance of the community.  There also are some Temple University and Drexel Medical students who live here, but they have a bit more of a commute.

A small but vocal minority of us are not students and are actually gainfully employed!  We are just a short train ride (or a very decent walk) away from Center City and downtown Philadelphia, home to many businesses, government centers, etc.  The cost of living here is quite affordable, making our community a very viable option for the non-Upper West Side yuppie in all of us.

Our goal in creating these pages is to provide resources and links that will help residents and visitors make the most of what we have to offer. Instead of hiring a town crier to announce news and events, we run a community listserv on YahooGroups. The listserv is called 4105Jews and is open to community members. To join, please send a blank email 4105jews-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

The undergraduate Orthodox community at Penn maintains its own website, an important repository for announcements, minyan times, and photos. They also run the upenn.hillel newsgroup, accessible through Penn's news.upenn.edu server, but not to those without a Penn account. It can be a bit chaotic, but there are enough students who read it regularly that important news posted to it gets passed around quickly.
