The West Philadelphia area close to Penn is dominated by student housing - mostly older apartment buildings and row houses that were converted into flats. Housing prices are reasonable for a student salary or stipend. In general the further west a building is, the cheaper the rent. Center City Philadelphia is a bit hipper, but can be pricier. If you are interested in living within the neighborhood eruv, please consult the
eruv map. Although the eruv ends at 43rd Street, there are many nice places a few blocks further west along Baltimore Avenue and neighboring blocks. Several members of our community have found this to be an acceptable trade-off.
Typical West Philly rents:
$690 +/- $200 for a studio
$850 +/- $300 for a one bedroom apartment
$1250 +/- $300 for a two bedroom apartment
Please note that the areas closest to campus tend to be in higher end of these ranges. You may also consult the
Penn Off-Campus Housing site, from which the above data was taken, for more information about off-campus living and a list of local realators..
If interested,
Penn Graduate Housing at Sansom Place falls within the Eruv. Special Shabbos arrangements may be made for entry if needed.
Popular buildings within the community include (realator is listed in parenthases, see directory linked above):
4105 Spruce St (Sprucewood, Campus Apartments)
4141 Spruce St (Spruce Hall, NPDF)
4101 Spruce St (The Berkshire, UCA)
329 S 42 St (Surrey Hall, UCA)
4111 Walnut St (Capus Apartments)
4247 Locust (The Fairfax, A.H. Klein)
If you are looking for someone to share housing with, you may use the listserv to post your request and search parameters. You may also check out the OCP's
roomate finder and
classifieds. It is generally easiest to find roommates in the early summer (for the fall) and late December (for the spring).
